As we wrote on the last post, Webber has been writing on the UK Directors web page, as a guest, through 5 days.
In his last day Webber wrote about the whole process of the Emperor editing
So here are his words, all clear and well explained.

Sayonara

Friday is here – the end of the second week of my edit, and the end of my stint at @Directors_UK as guest blogger.

I realize that I’ve spent more time waxing lyrical over tech and twitter than I have on the current process I’m going through with my film.  So, an update from the post-production trenches:

We have three cutting rooms going at the moment here at Park Road in the heart of Peter Jackson’s empire.

In the first I’m sitting with editor Chris Plummer trying to knock some sense into the structure of “Emperor”. I’m always cheered in this process by the (half remembered) words of Robert Wise who said something along the lines of how a film must be kicked and beaten and pummelled and dragged around the block by the scruff of its neck until it is wrestled into submission.

Of course, each film fights you differently – in this instance we have to juggle the competing demands of a political thriller and a love story, two different timelines and a flashback structure. We have a tight delivery schedule so the pressure is on but we’re doing our best to fight the good fight.

I have followed the same career path as Robert Wise, in that  I was an editor for many years before I turned my hand to directing, so I appreciate his perspective.

"You know, people always think if you start out as a film editor, you shoot less footage. Actually, just the opposite is true. I tend to grab as much coverage as I can because as a former editor I know how important it is to have those few frames."

Words of wisdom.

The cutting room next door has Simon Price seated at the Avid. He is busy cutting the trailer which our sales company Sierra will screen at Cannes. Wellington -Auckland -Sydney -Dubai - Nice and back again ought to be a pleasure – almost four days travelling to spend just two days meeting distributors and doing the whole dog and pony show. We are trying to whittle two hours down to a finely honed five minutes that shows off the film to its best advantage. We have a wealth of good-looking material to choose from, with great performances to boot, but getting the right balance is difficult. Do we concentrate on telling the story or showing off our production values?

The third cutting room is where assistant Peter Skarratt is working. As we are trying to re-create the bombed out apocalyptic landscape of Tokyo, there are a large number of VFX shots being worked on. Peter is knocking up some temps for us to work with in the edit, and wrangling the material that Iloura, our VFX house in Melbourne, are sending to us.

Meanwhile, down the road they are still filming “The Hobbit”. Behind every door in this place lies a closely guarded post production secret. This weekend brings two pleasures – the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra playing Debussy’s La Mer, and the premiere of New Zealand indie movie “Good For Nothing”, a Western set in the US but filmed entirely on the south island on a shoestring budget.

WEBBER HABLA DEL EFECTO TWEET Y DE L@S WEBBIES EN EL BLOG DE LA PAGINA DIRECTORS.UK / WEBBER TALKS ABOUT THE TWEET EFFECT AND THE WEBBIES ON THE BLOG OF THE UK.DIRECTORS WEB

Peter Webber is writing nowadays in the  web's blog http://www.directors.uk.com , the UK director's of movies and TV page.
On his second day of posting Webber wrote about the shooting of Emperor, well, about the tweeting effect on the movie and how "thanks" to Matthew Fox some crazy thing happened with his Tweets about the Emperor's shooting.
Webber "blames" Foxy.
We should to emphasize the references  to the Emperor Facebook page created by Tina @lostdogs20, the great trading cards created by Russell @Russ24L and too, to our blog.

Feeding the #Webbies
I blame Matthew Fox. The craziness started when it was announced that we had signed Matthew, the star ofLost, to play the lead role in my movie Emperor alongside Tommy Lee Jones. The film is a political thriller and love story set in Tokyo in 1945 during the first days of the American occupation there. Before I knew it,  I was being besieged on Twitter by a small but determined posse of Matthew’s fans eager for updates and information about the film.
These were no ordinary fans. They were tenacious, demanding, and strangely polite in thanking me for the little snippets of information I would throw their way. They had a voracious appetite for the most insignificant of details. They howled with delight when I posted a picture of the outside of his trailer. And bit by bit their love for Matthew and Lost mutated into an affection and enthusiasm for my movie, now known as #Emperor (the hashtag is a Twitter thing).
The producers were concerned about my tweeting these scraps of information. Feeding the ducks, they called it. They  wanted to keep a firm grip on publicity.  So we came to an agreement whereby I would not send out photos of cast in the costumes designed by Ngila Dickson or of the sets designed by Grant Major. Outside of that I had pretty free reign. As we headed into production I amped up the frequency of my tweets, detailing the ups and downs of film production, posting behind the scenes pictures of crew, extras, and very occasionally the main cast in off screen moments. The red photo above is one example.
“@PeterWebber is like a gift from the BTS gods. If you aren't following him, its YOUR loss. We are watching a movie happen w/ play by plays”
The new followers I accrued began to contact and write to each other and would  congregate in chat rooms and message boards around the internet. To my amusement, and not a little embarrassment, they christened themselves the #Webbies. They can sometimes come across as obsessive and stalker-like, its true, but having a touch of OCD myself I can forgive that
One of them took it upon themselves to organise all my tweets and snaps from the set on a Facebook page for all those non-tweeters wanting to read the updates. That page has now become an unofficial diary of the shoot.

2  fangirls  from Spain and Argentina, @55PiLi55 and @Jack_Shephard23 collaborated to start their own Spanish language blog
As I waited for DP Stuart Dryburgh to finish lighting the set became a kind of  Zen activity, keeping me calm and within the zone instead of pacing the set anxiously, wondering why we weren’t ready to shoot yet.
“Brilliant that you are immersed in directing film but take seconds to update fans and film making world. Love it. #Thumb-tastic”
My followers on Twitter (Not so many compared to other film makers. None at all compared to Lady Gaga) kept me amused with their replies and their shouts of encouragement from the sidelines.  It was clear that many of them felt strangely honoured by the little peek behind the scenes I was offering. Some went to extraordinary lengths – @lostdogs20 even sent a gift package. I had a sudden glimpse into the intensity and mania of the world of fanboys and fangirls, something I’d never really grasped before. My father was particularly disturbed when he received an avalanche of  Happy Birthday greetings after I tweeted that in the frenzy of production I had forgotten his birthday. He had only signed up to follow my exploits as I’m so bad at phoning home when I’m shooting.
Some of the things posted by the #Webbies on the Facebook fanpage had me doubled up with laughter, such as the set of trading cards created by @Russ24L
Many posted thank you videos that were charming (though some of you might think them cloying).
“I'm pretty sure I will see @PeterWebber's movie #Emperor a million times in the theatre if its half as good as his tweets are.”
Although tweeting about #Emperor is a small test case, it’s evidence of an interesting thing that’s happening. I wonder whether the “old media” paradigm of controlling the flow of information with a team of publicists and carefully managing it in as restrictive a way as possible is due for re-invention. I understand that it make sense to plan a campaign and build up an appetite for a film just before its release. But as far as I’m concerned, an independent, period film that deals seriously with history and politics like ours needs all the followers it can get.

Culpo a Matthew Fox.
No eran fans normales.

 http://www.facebook.com/EmperorMatthewFox.

http://emperor-pikela.blogspot.com.es/

Me encanta. # Pulgar-tastic "

Algunos llegaron a extremos extraordinarios -

WEEK 1,April 12/13 EMPEROR'S EDITION:DAY 4/5- SEMANA 1, 12/13 Abril...

Going on with the edition at the end of the first week.

Today some hints about how will be the Emperor's poster

WEEK 1,April 10th EMPEROR'S EDITION:DAY 2- SEMANA 1EDICION: DIA 2, 10 Abril

The Emperor's edition keeps going. Hard task to take off some scenes. But the movies, we all know it, have his running time.
Peter Webber nos continua manteniendo informad@s.
Peter Webber still keeps us informed

Tijeras, a trabajar!.

WEEK 9 / Mar. 29- DAY 42.END OF SHOOTING/ DIA 42:FINAL DE RODAJE

Ultimo dia! Ultimas 3 o 4 tomas.
Gracias Matthew Fox POR EXISTIR!.
Estaremos ansiosos esperando a ver esta gran pelicula.

Last day!! Last 3 or 4 shots!!. Emotion, stress anxiety and some sadness. A work ends and another starts, not with the actors but with the other leaders, Webber and his team.
We have enjoyed a unique experience and maybe unforgettable. It has been two epic months following Webber and Foxy movements.
We feel like it was a series end. We assist to a new end. Something not as bigger as Lost, of course, but kind of sad feeling too.
Thank you very much Peter Webber for sharing with us your excellent work. Thank you Matthew Fox for EXISTING!. We will eargely awaiting for this great movie Emperor.

Even trying always do the blog in a chronological way. just for once we skip the rule. Circumstances force!!!

WEEK 9 / Mar. 28- SHOOTING DAY 41 /RODAJE DIA 41

Second last  day of Emperor's shooting, with a feeling (rather sad feeling) that something very intense during these last two months is going to the end.

History in the making!

Deseadme buena suerte y Sayonara.
